Sensei Kaufmann teaches the Duke Aikido and T'ai Chi classes through the Duke University Physical Education Program. The beginner's Aikido class meets in the combatants room of Wilson Gym on West Campus (1st floor), 11:40-12:55 Tuesday/Thursday. There are no martial prerequisites for the class, but each student must wear an unmarked gi (Judo or Karate, purchasable through the instructor) and purchase and read a copy of The Aikido Student Handbook by Greg O'Conner Sensei. The intermediate Aikido class meets in the same place and time from 11:40-12:55 Tuesday/Thursday. Students are expected to own a gi and a copy of The Aikido Student Handbook (again, they can be purchased from the instructor). Martially, students should already have experience with Aikido (for instance, in the beginner's Aikido class or at an outside Aikido dojo). If the student has studied other martial arts, especially rolling/falling arts like Judo, they are encouraged to talk to Sensei after class to see if the intermediate class is right for their background instead of the beginner's class. Classes will be taught simultaneously, with beginners and intermediate practicing together (as is traditional). Practicing with diverse levels of aikidoists helps all levels to fine tune their techniques. The T'ai Chi class meets from 10:05 to 11:20 in in Wilson 110. Students should wear loose-fitting, black training pants and a white tee shirt to class. Aiki Jo, defense with the Japanese short staff, meets from 8:30 to 9:50 in Wilson 110. Basic principles and movements with short staff; foundational movements of Aikijo through study and practice of short and long forms. Students wear judo gis for this class. Classes will be instructed by Kaufmann sensei (see his Aikido bio), and assistant instructor Mike Fliss. Make-up classes are $10/class at Open Sky in Hillsborough. Check dojo schedule for tai chi times and beginning Aikido class times. We strongly suggest organizing car pools amongst classmates so several people can get over to classes. |
